Many of the Civil War era weapons were still present at Fort Taylor when the concrete gun batteries were built. Apparently, the scrap value did not justify them being removed, so many were either buried in the casemates, or used as reinforcing in the concrete, such as seen in the front of this Endicott battery.
This view also shows what was the second casemate tier, prior to removal of the upper tiers. On the right is the front of an Endicott battery. Many of the weapons were left in the casemates below this tier, and have been recovered during restoration work on the fort.
This columbiad is an example of a weapon recovered from the casemates. Although it shows some signs of corrosion, the overall condition of many of the weapons is quite good after work to prevent further corrosion.
